She told doctors there was a pen in her stomach. She told doctors there was a pen in her stomach.

They said that was impossible.

She even explained exactly how it happened. While checking a spot on her tonsil with a pen, she slipped and accidentally swallowed it. Doctors reassured her everything was normal.

For years she lived with the feeling that something wasn’t right… and with the frustration of not being believed.

Then decades later a CT scan finally revealed the truth.
A pen sitting in her stomach exactly where she said it was.

When doctors removed it… the pen still worked.

Stories like this are a reminder of something simple but powerful in medicine: sometimes the most important clue is listening to the patient.

If you were her, what would you write in that letter to the doctors who dismissed her story?

How would you react if your fingers or toes slowly How would you react if your fingers or toes slowly started separating on their own?

It sounds unbelievably scary, but this is a real medical condition doctors sometimes see. A tight scar band can form around a finger or toe and slowly cut off the blood supply over time. The surprising part is that if it’s caught early, treatment can sometimes stop the process and save the digit.

Medicine reveals some truly strange conditions.

Now I’m curious… what disease scares you the most?

A drunk trauma patient arrives with severe interna A drunk trauma patient arrives with severe internal bleeding and refuses the emergency surgery that could save his life.

He says he understands the consequences. Without surgery he will likely die. With it he could recover.

But he’s intoxicated. And now his condition is rapidly worsening.

So what should the doctors do in that moment?

Respect his decision… or intervene to save his life?

I’m curious what people think about this one.#medicine #healthcare #doctorlife #medicaleducation #medlife
It sounds unbelievable, but it’s a real moment in It sounds unbelievable, but it’s a real moment in medical history.

After Abraham Lincoln was shot, doctors had no scans, no neurosurgery, and almost no tools. One physician repeatedly placed his finger into the wound in Lincoln’s brain to remove blood clots that were building pressure. Each time the clot was cleared, Lincoln resumed breathing again.

He survived about nine hours after the shooting.

Medicine has changed enormously since 1865.

The real question is… if this exact injury happened today, could modern trauma care or neurosurgery save him?

What do you think?

A teenager with cancer says he’s done with treatme A teenager with cancer says he’s done with treatment.

Doctors can keep going, but the procedures are painful and everything tried so far has failed.

His parents want to continue, hoping a new treatment might appear.

Situations like this raise one of the hardest questions in medicine.

Who should make the final call?

The patient… or the parents?

At first glance this looks easy. But most people At first glance this looks easy.

But most people count the wrong number of dogs the first time they see this.

Your brain has a powerful face-detection system that fires the moment it sees two dark spots and a nose-like shape. It’s the same reason people see faces in clouds, buildings, and random objects.

So be honest…

How many dogs did you actually see before your brain figured it out?

A patient near the end of life has a defibrillator A patient near the end of life has a defibrillator that keeps shocking his heart every time it stops.

Each shock is extremely painful.

Doctors say the device can be turned off.
But the family believes doing that would feel like actively causing death. They want him to pass naturally.

Situations like this create difficult questions about comfort, ethics, and family wishes.

There isn’t always a clear answer.

What would you do in this situation?

Some moments in medicine stay with you forever. E Some moments in medicine stay with you forever.

Early in my training I faced a situation in the operating room that created a real ethical dilemma. The surgery itself was going perfectly. The surgeon was highly skilled. But something about the situation kept bothering me.

When you’re standing inches from someone in an OR, you notice things. And sometimes those moments force you to ask difficult questions about responsibility, judgment, and what the right thing to do really is.

This happened over 20 years ago, but scenarios like this are still discussed in medicine today because there isn’t always an obvious answer.

I’m curious how people think about situations like this.

What would you have done? I’m happy to share how this was handled.

Some moments in medicine stay with you forever. A Some moments in medicine stay with you forever.

A patient came in with severe abdominal distention and hadn’t been able to go to the bathroom for weeks despite every treatment.
When we positioned him face-down for surgery, the pressure released instantly… and the entire operating room froze.

It was one of the most shocking moments I’ve ever witnessed in an OR.

I was relieved for the patient… but I felt terrible for the medical student standing at the foot of the table.

Be honest — if that happened to you, what would your reaction be?
