If something is removed from your body… should it If something is removed from your body… should it still belong to you?

Most people assume that once a surgeon takes out tissue, an organ, or even expensive surgical hardware, it automatically goes back to the patient. That’s not usually how it works. Hospitals and pathology departments take custodial control, and there are strict rules about what happens next.

Can you request it back? Sometimes.
Is it guaranteed? No.

It raises a bigger question about ownership, medicine, and where control shifts once something leaves your body.

What’s your take?

Would you call for an emergency landing at 35,000 Would you call for an emergency landing at 35,000 feet?

A passenger suddenly develops facial droop, slurred speech, and drooling. The captain asks if we need to land immediately.

You examine him.

And you say… keep flying.

Ten minutes later, every symptom is completely gone.

What would you have done? And what do you think actually happened?

This is the reality of time-sensitive infections and the split-second decisions doctors face when patients don’t believe how serious things are.

How do you convince someone to stay when every minute matters?

Most people assume brain lobectomies are outdated. Most people assume brain lobectomies are outdated. They’re not. In modern neurosurgery, carefully removing a selected portion of a brain lobe can help treat certain tumors or severe seizures when other options aren’t effective. These procedures rely on advanced technology, detailed planning, and a constant focus on preserving essential brain function. This is real, modern brain surgery and it’s still performed today. What would you want to know before trusting someone with a decision like this?

Can you refuse care from a resident at a teaching Can you refuse care from a resident at a teaching hospital?

Patient autonomy is always important. Residents are licensed physicians. Some are years into advanced training and may perform procedures and surgery frequently under supervision. The attending is ultimately responsible for everything.

So how much say should a patient have in who’s taking care of them?

Let’s talk about it.

He went to the ER for worsening headaches… and doc He went to the ER for worsening headaches… and doctors discovered three metallic objects sitting inside his brain that had been there for decades. No trauma. No scars. No neurological deficits. Just a scan that changed everything. The real shock wasn’t just what they found it was the decision that came next. Would you remove them… or leave them alone?
