Even at 51… even as a full professor… some things Even at 51… even as a full professor… some things never change.

My mom still takes my research papers and puts them on her fridge like they’re my biggest accomplishment. And honestly… I love that she does.

There’s something about how parents see you that never evolves with titles or numbers. It’s just pride.

Aren’t moms the best? Tell me about yours 👇#DoctorsOfInstagram #ProfessorLife #FamilyMoments #ProudMom #RealLifeStories
Smoking plus oxygen can turn one spark into a hosp Smoking plus oxygen can turn one spark into a hospital-wide emergency. How would you stop this fire emergency from happening?

As a doctor, I’d start here: remove every lighter and cigarette, remove oxygen only if medically safe, treat nicotine withdrawal aggressively, increase supervision, move them closer to the nursing station, stop visitors from bringing anything in, and if they still refuse, assess capacity and escalate safety protocols.

None of these options are perfect.

Doing nothing is not an option.

What would actually work best?

Looks wild, but the real takeaway is simple: respe Looks wild, but the real takeaway is simple: respect the spine and know the anatomy. The spine protects critical structures, so force, precision, and stability matter. There are strong structures between the skull and spine that help prevent something like this from happening, but RA, EDS, trauma, or degeneration can change that stability. This is about awareness and safety. In my spine division, we work closely with chiropractors and other specialists and take a team approach to spine care.

A huge amount of money goes into promoting medical A huge amount of money goes into promoting medical devices to doctors and hospitals. I’m not pointing at any specific company or physician. I happen to like both physicians who work in industry and industry reps. This is just my perspective. I just wish more of that investment went toward lowering costs for patients and making care more accessible. That’s where it would make the biggest difference.

Curious how others see it.

This is what catastrophic medical nightmare looks This is what catastrophic medical nightmare looks like in real time.
A brain aneurysm actively bleeding vs a heart wall rupturing open both can be deadly in minutes, but they behave completely differently, and that difference decides survival.

One can handle large volumes of blood… until pressure shuts it down.
The other can’t tolerate even a small amount before pressure spikes and damage begins.

Most people get this wrong. Which one did you pick?

I give my patients my cell. I’ve found it actuall I give my patients my cell.

I’ve found it actually changes how I take care of them…
lowers their stress and smoothens recovery just knowing they can reach me.

Some doctors do this. Some don’t.
And after 20 years, I’ve never regretted it.

But here’s the part that always surprises people…

I don’t think I’d ever feel comfortable calling my own doctor’s cell.

I love when my patients call me. It’s never a bother.
To me, that’s just part of being a doctor.

Would you feel comfortable calling yours? #DoctorsOfInstagram #Health #Medicine #DoctorLife #Healthcare
Most people think pain after surgery is unpredicta Most people think pain after surgery is unpredictable. It’s not always. As a neurosurgeon, I pay close attention to small signals before surgery that can tell me who’s going to struggle the most. This “marker test” is one of them. If I see it, I don’t wait I plan ahead with more pain control, more time, and more support. Because managing pain isn’t just part of the job… it’s part of taking care of people the right way. If you’ve been through surgery, you know how real this is.

I’m a neurosurgeon who also acts on TV… and the on I’m a neurosurgeon who also acts on TV… and the one thing that always throws me off on set is the “blood.” It’s not just fake it’s insanely sticky. Your gloves start sticking together, every movement makes this tacky sound, and you end up constantly adding KY just to keep your hands moving. It’s one of those behind-the-scenes details you never see on camera… but once you know it, you can’t unsee it.
So now I’m curious which would be grosser to deal with: real blood or TV blood?

You think yawning means you’re tired. But it’s act You think yawning means you’re tired.
But it’s actually your brain stimulating itself to become alert.

Every yawn triggers a coordinated shift in blood flow and fluid around your brain.
That movement helps reset circulation, stabilize pressure, and flip your brain back toward alertness.

Once you see what’s happening under the surface, a yawn feels very different.
